Name: The Monitors
Motto: “Honour, Loyalty and the Hunt!”
(and to a lesser extent)
"I don´t care how, just bring the ruddy litle coward down!"
Age: 6 years (4 officially),
Founders: Dak and Seeks
Insignia: The black head of a monitor lizard held up at attention over an amber background.
Ship: The ‘Whiptail’ is a small (in comparison to other cyclonian ships) heavily modified Cyclonian carrier ship. Its main hull is 250 meters in length, 100 meters wide and 90 tall with the two tiered bridge situated directly behind at a somewhat elevated position. The two jet turbine engines are attached behind the bridge and on each side of the ships main tiller. The top tier sports the flight control room including the pilots position, navigation table, a radio table, the gunners position, a periscope, and a captains chair. The lower tier is more of an observation deck and recreational area. Underneath the bridge is the hangar bay which opens up directly onto the flight deck which leads out straight over the top of the ship. After years of use the ship now carries the tell tale signs of raptor aesthetics, lots of extra armour plating and some strategically place spikes. The ship is dominated by colours of brown and beige and hints of green plus the Monitors Insignia on both sides of the main hull.
Weapons: Four forward facing ‘bombard’ class canons powered by yellow stratus crystals are controlled from the pilots position. Two sets of much smaller ‘culverin’ class canons on the ships sides are controlled by the gunner and can fire in at most every angle on their respective sides, however only one side can be controlled at once. The ship is also armed with three grappling harpoons (not to be confused with its anchors) on each side and are controlled from the gunners position as well. A manual gunner position is deployable from the back of the bridge where the gun is elevated on to the bridges canopy. Currently the position can be deployed with a harpoon/grappler gun or a medium sized ‘mortar class’ fire canon, which can be used as both long range artillery and for close range engagements. The smallest weapons on the ships itself are two anti-skimmer swivel canons on the bridges outside railing. The last weapon is possibly the ‘Whiptails’ most dangerous. If the ship is able to secure another vessel with its harpoons it can bring it up to its side and use the one of its ‘stings’ to penetrate the enemies hull. Each sting is basically a large metal spiked tube, one situated on each side of the ship, large enough for someone to pass through quickly. This allows the Monitors a quick and easy way to board an unsuspecting enemy vessel.
Normally Carries: Six crew members, their possessions, various supplies(food, medical supplies, fuel, weapon ammunition and assorted crystals), extra gear and the six Bonewings belonging to the crew.
Positions:
Daktyle-Captain/Lead hunter. Raptor. Makes final decision on what prey is worth hunting, which plan to follow and where the Monitors will search for their prey next. During a hunt and in battle, Dak is usually the one at the front of his men leading them on. Rides a modified Bonewing. Dak fights using an energy dirk powered by a level 9 Asp Crystal. At times also uses a small hand-bow using various bolts.
Grik- Pilot/Second in Command/Cook. Raptor. Helps Dak come up with plans, make decisions and generally run the ship. Also has the job of piloting the Whiptail and unofficial cook. Sometimes rides a modified Bonewing when he needs too. He fights using a Windstone crystal powered whip and a scalus powered knife as back up.
Cekreet-Scout/Navigator/Tracker. Raptor. Seeks job ranges from figuring out the flight plan, scouting ahead of the main group to tracking down the Monitors targets. He rides a modified Bonewing like the rest of the Monitors. Wields a short spear powered by a scalus crystal and a small scalus crystal powered back up knife.
Chusil-Mechanic/Light Artillery/Ballistics. Human. She’s the one who restored the ‘Whiptail’ to its former glory and the one who is keeping everyone else up in the air. She’s also the one who creates most of the weapons and the ammos used aboard the ship. Wields a light hand held canon powered by Stratus crystals, several small bombs and a short knife powered by a scalus crystal.
Kinyon- Marksman/Stealth. Raptor. This is the guy who hangs back in the shadows and picks off important targets or those trying to escape. Kinyon is the group marks man and stealth expert. Rides a modified Bonewing. Wields a composite short bow with various arrows and a small scalus crystal powered knife.
Doctor Jeremiah Helbing – Medic/Recovery/Ship gunner. Human. Doc is responsible for keep everyone in good health and recovering those who need to bail out during a battle. If necessary he will take control of the ships cannons although he really prefers not to. Rides a stripped down and modified white Bonewing. In emergencies he draws on his shock rod powered by a shocker crystal in the hilt.
Social Standing: They have made somewhat of a reputation and are no longer unknowns in the vast skies of Atmos. Almost anyone who is on the run from cyclonia know to look out for them. However as raptors and mercenaries they are still looked down on by the standing Cyclonian military.
Finance: Usually have a steady flow of cash from Cyclonia and have no mean amount stashed away in a bank somewhere, mostly earned from past jobs.
Lifestyle: The ‘Monitors’ move from place to place searching for their next target or waiting for Cyclonia to give them their next mission. They seemingly travel to different skies at random to scope out possible targets. When not hunting the Monitors spend most of their time on warm terras eating and sleeping, a relaxing change even for the most enthusiastic hunter.
Base Of Operations: Mostly the ‘Whiptail’, but have also sort of claimed a small desert covered terra with a small oasis where they stop to do repairs and gather some supplies.
They have constructed a small landing pad for the ‘Whiptail’ and skimmers as well as a radio hut in case of emergencies.
Territory: The ‘Monitors’ mostly roam around the skies not really tied down to any one place. However because their small desert terra is located in the western skies it is only a matter of time before they show up there.
Pets: Snatch and Grab, Seeks trained Occucrows.
Fears: Running out of good prey to hunt, Cyclonia realising just how fragile their tie to them is and Chusi when she’s mad.
Goals: To find their next big prey and bring it down.
Priorities: Usually whatever Daks priorities happen to be.
Hobbies: Varies but common hobbies amongst the crew are hunting, eating and sleeping.
Flaws: Although they vary for each member but as a group they tend to stay rather tunnel versioned when it comes to completing a mission or finishing a hunt.
Peculiarities: Will work together with other groups (such as Sky Knights, Pirates, the Colonel and otherwise non-Cyclonians) so long as they are not their targets and do not interfere. That is if anyone is willing to work with the group of hunters.
Loyalty: Each member has their own personal loyalties but generally everyone is first and foremost loyal to the ‘pack’. Only allied with Cyclonia for as long as they provide the pack with good hunting.
Soft Spot: Trophies, their pride, meat and Griks Skyshark fin soup.
Talents: Tracking down and capturing/killing anything from a Pirate crew to a school of Skysharks. On the whole the group is more effective on land than in the air.
Secrets: The details of their allegiance to Cyclonia and the location of their little desert terra.
Brief History: Daktyl originates from Terra Bogaton the home of the most dominant group of Raptors. He was born to two warriors under Reptons command and spent most of his upbringing learning from his parents to be eventually join the ranks. However instead of becoming one of Reptons warriors he decided to head out with several other young raptors to join one of the many raptor mercenary groups. Five years of travelling and switching between mercenary groups found him and his friend Seeks in the brig of a Murk Raider ship after they had attacked and wiped out the mercenary group the two had been a part of.
In the brig the pair met the younger Raptor Sinyon and who agreed to work together to escape. After freeing themselves fromt he chains and fighting their way out of the brig the trio set off several of the Murk raiders own bombs in the small raiding ships engine room. They were managed to escape after commandeering some stolen skimmers during the chaos of the ships descent into the wastelands. Once at a safe distance Sinyon asked to join as a permanent member of their group. Not aware they were even hiring Dak and Seeks hesitantly agreed to let the younger raptor join up with them.
After another year of freelance work the group was hired by Cyclonia as what they referred to as “Pest Control”. Now they weren’t the only group hired but it offered steady work and a new influx of cash. These new resources aloud the trio to purchase themselves a ship, now their signature carrier ‘the Whiptail’. A short stop by a place called ‘the Skyside shanty’ six months later resulted with a chance meeting with the seasoned warrior Grik. Seeing it as an opportunity to get a real pilot for the ‘Whiptail’ he bought the Grik some drinks and asked him to join up. At first Grik simply laughed the proposal off and called Dak a youngling upstart this quickly escalated into a full shanty wide brawl and when at the end the only two left standing were Dak and Grik he laughed and finally agreed to join.
Several more months later during a hunt deep into the tundra of terra blizzaris, only manageable with the use of heated cloaks, they met up with a human doctor working at a remote outpost trying to keep the few people that had survived an attack by some strange monsters. Afterwards the outpost was swarmed by large gorilla like snow beasts and the pack was barely able to escape with the few survivors and their target fugitive. Once back on a civilised terra the Doctor offered to join up as a way of furthering his experiences and to pay them back for saving his life. That was how the unlikely ship medic joined up with the pack of raptors and eventually decided to stay. On their following departure from the terra it was Seeks who suggested they give themselves a name and an insignia, something that would be recognised as their mark wherever they went. The group seemed to support the idea and with that the ‘Monitors’ were officially born.
2 years after that on terra Amazonia they had been hired to track down and eliminate a nest of Vulca bats that had been harassing nearby cyclonian trade ships. The hunt was successful but the ‘Whiptail’ was badly damaged and needed repairs. Finding the only nearby mechanic was a local from one of the small native settlements, they went about ‘securing’ her for the cause. This plan was in itself a bad idea as once they had the captive in their grasp and had set her to fixing the ship she refused to leave. Saying that she would stay on board until she was paid back in full for the extensive work she had done.
Its been 2 years since then and shes still with the monitors, in fact the entire group has stayed together so far making up some sort of weird twisted pack. As hunters of bestial and humanoid alike they are now fairly well known for being some of the most skilled and experienced ones alive. But there is rumour that the Monitors are bored of the prey that Cyclonia offers them and that they are on the search for even bigger game.
